For a magic holiday you do not need a magic formula. Just spread your maps and look for Croatia, antique Zadar and Long Island. Geographically, it is the island of peculiar contrasts and the largest island in the North Dalmatian islands. His name justifies the length of about 45 km and width is between 1 and 4 km, with the highest peak Vela Straza (338 m). Coast of the island towards the open sea is characterized by sharp contrasts: the part that is located in the Park Nature Park is mostly steep and make it fascinating cliffs, and on the southeast side of the island can find quiet coves and sandy beach Sakarun. This island beauty is ideal for swimming and enjoying the cleanness of the sea and the beauty of nature. As the southeastern part of the island is protected and declared a Nature Park, so the northwestern part of Long Island is recognized as one of the most attractive and the most interesting areas of Zadar County and was declared a significant Croatian landscape.
In the islands 12 settlements lives around 1500 inhabitants. The road connects all settlements on the island, and offers magnificent views of the surrounding islands. It is well connected with the mainland by ferries and fast boats. The island has its branch office of port authority, several post offices, doctors clinic, a customs checkpoint, offices of the Tourist Board, and many restaurants and other service facilities. In Sali, Božava and Veli Rat there are anchorage points for boats with possibilities for resupplies of water and electricity. In Zaglav there is a gas station for boaters. Sightseeing tourism and sightseeing are very developed, and there are marked trails for trekking and cycling. In the area of saljski field is a terrain for paintball. Across the islands there are marked archaeological sites of which there are fifteen, and are complemented with info tables. Long Island is primarily a place of relaxation and enjoyment. In each of the 12 Long Island places during the summer months there are festivals, usually in the name of the patron saint of the place, where you can enjoy the sounds of local music and traditional dishes.
Proponents of active rest will find their satisfaction in the exploration of the island on beautiful and marked hiking trails or on trips to the Nature Park and National Park Telašćica. During the year there are organized various sports events, and there are trails for hiking and a climbing area. Also, on Long Island, there are several diving schools that are at your service to anyone who wants to penetrate into the mysterious depths of the sea, and whose participants visit some of the most beautiful dive sites such as this underwater cave Brbinjšćica or islet Mežanj.
Long Island, with a number of attractive places and natural beauty, offers visitors a journey through the world of tradition and modern lifestyle.
All settlements on Long Island administratively belong to the municipality of Sali and the nearest to Verunić are Veli Rat with a small village Polje (across from "vale"), Soline and accros Božava peak above Solina is Božava in the vicinity is the famous beach Sakarun. Sakarun the most beautiful "wild" sandy beach on the Adriatic and beaches of white rocks shingle beach next to the lighthouse Veli Rat (Lanterna "Punta Bianca"). When the road crosses Božava top tourists can stand on parking along the road and enjoy the view towards SAKARUN, Cuna, Pantera and Solin bay Solišćica, islet Mežanj, the open sea in front of Long Island ("in Kulfi") and the islands of the Zadar archipelago to the Nortwest of Dugi Otok (Lagnici, Tramerka, Ist, Silba Premuda ...) which has been named one of the best views of the Mediterranean. One of the few resorts facing the open sea and thus the sun.
In the summer tourist season the Tourist Association of Verunic provides services and is located in Bra'skoj home (fraternal house - a building built in the contribution of all residents). Northwest part of Long Island was declared a protected landscape, in the heart of which is Verunic, and is under the protection of the Public Institution for Management of Protected Areas in Zadar County on the grounds that this place "... is among one of the most interesting and most beautiful parts of the Zadar archipelago. This stems primarily from the properties of the shore, which is the very rugged and broken down to form a unique panorama of the bay, the peninsula,.. Next quality of this zone is the varied vegetation which is represented by the characteristic Mediterranean community of macchia and pine groves (Aleppo and black pine). The indentation of mainland continues under the sea and we find numerous shoals, reefs, etc. This determines the specific rich biocenosis (ichthyofauna, shellfish, etc.). "
Seen from the hillside above the bay, the sea is an intense turquoise-blue, more akin to the Caribbean than the Adriatic. Saharun beach. The bay faces south, onto the open sea, and is rimmed by an 800-metre arch of smooth white stone, which in turn is backed by pinewoods. This is Saharun (aka Sakarun) beach, one of Croatia’s loveliest but least-known spots. You’ll find it at the north end of Dugi Otok island, in North Dalmatia, which remains a pleasantly low-profile destination, despite Croatia’s current popularity. Accessed down a gravel track, off the main road between the villages of Božava and Veli Rat, Saharun is the island’s best-known and most-photographed beach. The smooth white stones on the shore turn to fine white pebbles on the seabed, and the water is shallow, making it ideal for families with small children. From June to September, there are two beach bars hiring out sun beds and umbrellas, and beyond the roped-off swimming area, sailing boats often put down anchor. To the west end of Saharun, there is a headland with a small beach to each side, one overlooking the bay, and the other giving onto the open sea. In summer, a miniature train runs the 4km stretch from Božava to Saharun. Beyond this, there is little evidence of human activity: there is no building development within sight; the nearest car park is discretely hidden by pinewoods.
Arriving on the island is a pleasure in itself. The white-and-blue Jadrolinija ferry departs from the mainland port of Zadar, with its car-free old town of melancholy Roman ruins, magnificent Romanesque churches and Venetian fortifications. From a seat up on the top deck, all traces of urban life dissolve into the hazy blue Adriatic seascape, as the ferry zigzags its way between the scattered pine-scented islets of the Zadar archipelago, of which Dugi Otok is the most distant.
Dugi Otok translates literally to “Long Island”, and indeed it is, measuring 45km in length, and between 1km and 4km in breadth. Limestone predominates, covered with sparse scrub and woodland, scented with wild rosemary, mint and fennel. Fertile plots are planted with olive trees and vines. Historically, the island seems to have passed through the centuries uneventfully – even the Venetians and the Ottoman Turks neglected it during their campaigns along the Adriatic – so unlike islands such as Hvar and Korčula, no grand harbour towns were ever founded here.
For these hot days when you might not swim in the sea, but you want to lounge and relax in the privacy of your apartment.
For those gastronomic specialities and evening gatherings next to the grill.
Rest in the shade with the sound of birds and the waves in the distance.
Private parking for each guest.
